Wheat Donation Helps Provide 25,000 Units of Bread to Kansas City’s Hungry
OMAHA, NE — Kansas City area food banks will receive a much-needed supply of baked goods, thanks to donations from The Scoular Company and other companies within the food supply chain. Scoular donated a truck load of wheat– more than 59,000 pounds, equivalent to over 41,000 loaves of bread–to the Field to Family program that was founded by two individuals from Horizon Milling, L.L.C. and Hostess Brands, Inc.
Formed this October, the program aims to provide 25,000 units of baked goods to food pantries throughout the area from November to January. With cash and in-kind donations of wheat from 13 suppliers, including Scoular, wheat milling by Horizon Milling, and baking and distribution by Hostess Brands, the program is bringing companies together for a common cause.
During a time when demand for food items has increased due to economic downturn, pantry donations from major food corporations have decreased because of budget cuts. The need for food donations is at a high and in response, the Field to Family program aims to reach its 25,000 unit goal by mid-January 2010 and hopes to continue and expand the program beyond that date.
