Customer Marketing Manager
October 6, 2025
As fields of flax bloomed across the Canadian prairie in July, our flax team was getting ready for a successful harvest season and another year of connecting local flax to global markets. We know producers are looking for a reliable partner to maximize their crop value and find the best possible markets for their flaxseed. Demand continues to grow with a 7.3% CAGR expected from 2025 to 2033 for flax products1. Our experienced team and dedicated flax facility are ready to deliver, providing producers with reliable, efficient payments and year-round market access.
Producers can unlock new markets for their flaxseed through our Richardson flax processing facility, located in the heart of flax production. The facility accepts pre-scheduled deliveries year-round, with a capacity to process more than two million bushels annually. The business is supported by origination experts, facility operations, and knowledgeable merchants who bring Canadian flax to the North American and global export markets for crush, food, and pet food.
Behind every successful flax harvest is a network of specialists supporting producers at every touchpoint—from contracting to efficient handling and tapping into the world’s growing demand for high-quality flaxseed. By leveraging our expertise, storage capacity, and market connections, producers can focus on what they do best: growing exceptional flax.
Our facility was upgraded in 2023 to operate with three lines dedicated to flax, doubling processing capacity, and improving outbound loading for truck and rail. For producers, after partnering with originators to evaluate opportunities and secure contracts, the local Richardson team coordinates seamless delivery and unloading to keep the flax market moving.
Plant manager Dwayne Hourie runs operations with a team covering receiving, grading, processing, and plant maintenance.
“Smooth and efficient intake is equally important to the product that gets loaded out for customers,” says Hourie. “We move a lot of flax, and we’re ready to receive more from producers this fall.”
The facility is also supported by logistics specialists and food safety and quality experts, and complies with the rigorous Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) recognized standards.
Our flax is ideal for omega-3 applications like flaxseed oil, breads and snacks, and complete pet food diets. Scoular’s merchants have connections to high-volume buyers across the global crush markets and North American food and pet food industry. As demand for plant-based ingredients with a nutritional punch increases among consumers, flax continues to rise as an option for applications that tout health benefit claims like high fiber and omega-3 fatty acids.
“With demand strong across the board, I continue to see the value flax can bring to our grower footprint and our end-users” says Britt Cherry, GM in Scoular’s Flax Business. “We’re excited to talk to more producers this year about these market opportunities and why they might want to bring flax back into rotation next planting season.”
The flaxseed and meals available in bulk from Scoular are especially attractive to the pet industry. Pet food manufacturers add flaxseed to boost omega-3 content and support pets’ overall health, bolstering label claims for healthier skin and coat and heart health, as example.
“Our pet food customers are looking for consistent and high-quality flax”, says Cherry. “Through our producer partnerships, we’re able to provide the market with products that meet a pet brand’s expectations for both quality and convenience.”
We’re a go-to flax buyer, season after season. Producers can rely on us for flexible scheduling, quick and efficient payments, and to help their flax reach high-value end-use customers.
