OMAHA, NE (June 16, 2014) – Tyler Horning, Merchandiser at The Scoular Company and First Lieutenant, Infantry, in the Army National Guard, recognizes that it takes collaboration and cooperation from his employer in order to fulfill his civilian and military responsibilities. To show his appreciation for the efforts made to support him in his military duties, including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, consideration of family needs, and granting leaves of absence, Tyler nominated Jeff Wearden, Facility Business Manager of Scoular’s facility in Fremont, Neb., for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Patriot Award.
On Tuesday, June 10, 2014, three representatives from ESGR presented Wearden with the award at the office in Fremont. During the brief ceremony, the representatives praised Wearden’s willingness to support Horning’s military commitments. The award is also the first step in recognizing Scoular as a military-friendly employer.
“I really appreciate all of Tyler’s work and I’m happy to support him in his military role,” commented Wearden. “I feel it is an honor to do so and I’m proud to be associated with a company that is committed to service members – past and present.”
“It may not seem like a big deal, but it truly is to me,” said Horning. “It’s just a way to show my appreciation for Jeff’s support and understanding of balancing my civilian and military requirements. Later on I plan to submit Scoular as a whole for the next level of recognition for being military friendly.”
Horning has been in the Guard for 12 years and is stationed with the 92nd Troop Command in Lincoln, Neb. He has been deployed twice: serving for 18 months in 2005-2006 in Ar Ramadi, Iraq; and for 12 months in 2010-2011 in Kabul, Afghanistan.
About The Service Member Patriot Award
The first in ESGR’s series of awards is the Patriot Award. An employee serving in the National Guard or Reserve, or the spouse of a Guard or Reserve member, may nominate individual supervisors and bosses for support provided directly to the nominating service member and his or her family. Patriot Awards are given to individual supervisors, not to an entire staff or organization as a whole.
