OMAHA, NE (June 27, 2014) – On June 2, 2014, The Scoular Company’s facility in Channahon, Ill., received the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) prestigious Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) award for its exemplary commitment to workplace safety. This is the first SHARP award issued to Scoular in the state of Illinois, and the first of five SHARP awards presented to Scoular facilities in June.
Employees of Scoular’s Idalia, Colo., facility received three SHARP plaques on June 11, 2014, from the Colorado OSHA Consultation Group based in Ft. Collins, Colo. Rick Cook, program manager for the Colorado OSHA Consultation Group, commented during the ceremony that there are only five grain handling facilities in the state of Colorado in the SHARP program, with Scoular facilities in Idalia and Sterling holding two of those positions. Cook noted that this was, “quite an accomplishment.”
On June 16, Scoular’s Andres facility became the second Illinois location to achieve SHARP status. A ceremony to recognize Andres employees will be held at a later date.
“Facility employees work very hard over a long period of time to achieve SHARP status,” said Gary Kearn, Scoular Loss Control and Prevention Manager. “I am very proud of all of these employees. Their efforts ensure our injury rates remain extremely low, we meet or exceed safety compliance requirements, and we are exempt from random Federal OSHA inspections.”
“My congratulations and gratitude to everyone involved. I appreciate very much the effort to ensure the safety of our colleagues, customers, and friends at company locations on an ongoing basis,” said Chuck Elsea, Scoular Chief Executive Officer.
Through SHARP, OSHA recognizes smaller employers who operate exemplary safety and health management systems. SHARP is designed to provide incentives and support to employers who implement and continuously improve effective safety and health management systems at their work sites. SHARP may be renewed for sites that continue to maintain exemplary safety and health management systems. All SHARP companies are exempt from programmed OSHA inspections from one to two years.
