OMAHA, NE (October 3, 2014) – The National Grain & Feed Association (NGFA), in collaboration with the Pet Food Institute, is preparing for an annual Feed/Pet Food Conference, to be held October 7-9, 2014, in Omaha, Neb. John Heck, a senior vice president at The Scoular Company in Omaha, is the association’s first vice chairman.
“The program is designed specifically for feed and pet food sectors and addresses pressing policy, regulatory, and operations issues that companies face in today’s environment,” said an association spokesperson.
One of the issues that will be addressed during the conference is compliance with the Federal Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The 2011 act, which applies to food for both human and animal consumption, concentrates on preventing contamination rather than responding to it. The law, called “the most sweeping reform of our food safety laws in more than 70 years” by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), requires more frequent inspections, faster recalls, and enhanced tracking of both finished goods and their ingredients.
“Pet food is a very important, growing segment of Scoular’s portfolio,” said Joe Andrus, who oversees Scoular’s pet food and food related businesses. “The changing laws will definitely have a huge impact, which is why we’re always looking for opportunities such as this conference to stay up-to-speed on emerging issues and trends, as well as to share our knowledge with others in the industry.”
Andrus added, “By embracing new regulations, Scoular will continue to be an industry leader and reliable source of products that meet our customers’ expectations as well as FSMA guidelines.”
The Scoular Company and Scoular Canada are both active members of NGFA.
