Fiber is essential to maintaining a healthy digestive system. Unlike the other food nutrients -- fats, proteins, or carbohydrates - dietary fiber is not absorbed by our bodies. Instead, it helps other nutrients be absorbed and moderates the contents of our stomach and gastrointestinal tract. Some fiber feeds the healthy bacteria which line our digestive tracts. Soluble fiber dissolves in water. This type of fiber forms a gel-like material, which can slow passage of food through the digestive system. Soluble fiber can be found in plants, and fruits and vegetables including oats, lentils, barley, flax, apples, citrus, carrots, and peas.

Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water. This fiber can accelerate passage of food through our digestive system, provide bulking, and aid the metabolism of soluble fiber. Insoluble fiber is found in whole grains, seeds and nuts, wheat bran, chia, and many vegetables including cauliflower and dark leafy greens.
